Ring Sizing
Finding the Perfect Ring Size
Choosing the right ring size is easier than you may think, even if the ring is meant to be a surprise. With a few simple steps, you can get a comfortable, accurate fit while keeping the moment special.
How to Measure Your Ring Size
A properly fitting ring should slide over the knuckle with slight resistance and sit securely on the finger without feeling too tight. When removing the ring, there should be a small amount of friction. If the ring comes off with no effort at all, it is likely too loose.
Finding the right ring size is easier than most people think, even if you are planning a surprise proposal. Depending on how you want to approach the moment, there are several ways to estimate or confirm the correct fit.
Measuring for a Surprise Proposal
If you are trying to keep the proposal a surprise, one of the easiest methods is to use a ring they already wear. If they have a ring that fits their ring finger, you can measure the inside diameter and use an online ring size conversion chart to estimate the size. For a more accurate result, you can also take that ring to a local jeweler for confirmation or use a ring mandrel at home.
Another convenient option is the “Ring Sizer by Jason Withers ©” app. This app allows you to place an existing ring directly on your iPhone screen and adjust the slider until it matches the ring’s inside diameter, giving you a quick and simple size reading.
If they wear rings, but not on their ring finger, you can still measure one as a helpful reference. Just keep in mind that every finger is different, so the final ring may need to be resized after the proposal.
If none of these options are available, you can choose an average ring size and plan to resize the ring after the engagement. This is a common approach for surprise proposals, especially when keeping the moment a complete secret is the priority.
Our Recommendation
For the most accurate result, Matthew The Jeweler recommends using the “Ring Sizer by Jason Withers ©” app if you have access to an existing ring or visiting a local jewelry store to have the finger sized professionally.
Each of these methods is designed to help you find the ideal size from the comfort of your home or with professional guidance. Whether you are planning a surprise proposal or choosing a ring for yourself, our goal is to make sure your ring fits comfortably, securely, and beautifully.

Purchasing a Ring Sizer
For an easy at-home option, you can also purchase a ring sizer on Amazon to help measure your ring size before placing your order. A $20 purchase can save a lot of headache and time in the future.
For most standard ring designs, we recommend using this ring sizer:

For thicker ring designs, wider bands, or statement-style rings, we recommend using a wider ring sizer for a more accurate fit:

Wider rings tend to feel more snug on the finger, so using the proper sizing tool can help you choose a more comfortable and accurate size.
Things to Consider About Ring Sizing
When choosing a ring size, a few small details can make a big difference in comfort and fit.
If you are between two ring sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger size. It is better for a ring to fit slightly loose than to be too tight or difficult to slide over the knuckle. Keep in mind we can also do half and quarter sizes (for example, size 5.25 and size 5.5).
Wider rings also tend to fit more snugly than thinner bands, so they may require a slightly larger size for a comfortable fit. This is especially important for thicker engagement ring settings, wedding bands, or statement rings.
Timing can also affect your measurement. Try to avoid measuring your finger early in the morning or on extremely hot days, as fingers can be slightly swollen during these times. For the most accurate result, measure when your hands are at a normal temperature.
As a general reference, the average engagement ring size for women is typically between size 6 and 7, while the average ring size for men is around size 9.
What if my ring doesn't fit?
Every ring purchase from Matthew The Jeweler includes one complimentary ring resizing as part of our warranty -- given the possibility to. For instance, eternity designs where diamonds flow along the entire ring would need to be redesigned completely.
The ring may be resized up or down by 1 full US ring size. If the adjustment needed is greater than 1 US size, the center stone or setting may need to be reset in order to maintain the ring’s structure, security, and overall design integrity.
Please note that this complimentary resizing service is only available to clients located within the United States.
