The Diamond-Cut Dragon, Skull, and Tiger Pendant is a deep rectangular well framed by a thick openwork border of carved clouds — scrolled ruyi curls linked all the way round, left satin, cut clean through so the frame reads as a sculpture in its own right rather than an edge.
Inside, the back wall of the recess is cut into a full diamond-cut sunburst, faceted rays fanning out to the corners in bright metal. Everything raised off that field is satin, so the light stays behind the figures and never competes with them.
Three of them are stacked into the well. A tiger at the top with its jaws open, mane and whiskers cut in. A dragon coiling down through the group — scaled body, clawed foot, horned head worked into the upper right. And between them a human skull, eye sockets and nasal hollow carved deep, teeth showing.
In the lower corner sits a single smooth pearl, satin and completely plain. It is the only unbroken surface anywhere on the piece, and it is what keeps the composition from becoming noise — somewhere for the eye to land.
Dragon and tiger are the old paired opposites, the two forces that hold each other in balance. The skull between them is the reminder that both of them run out.
