The Diamond-Cut Santo Niño with Filigree Border Pendant is a rectangular plate built in three distinct layers, and the outer one is the reason to buy it. The filigree border is genuine pierced openwork — scrolling foliate volutes cut clean through the metal, running the full frame, with a carved shell fan turning each of the four corners. It is not a cut band on a solid edge; light passes through it.
Inside the frame the field drops into a recess cut with fine diamond-cut rays fanning out from behind the figure to all four sides — so the ground never sits still while the figure on it does.
The Santo Niño sits frontally on his chair in a soft satin, in the wide-brimmed pilgrim’s hat with a plume and a short cape over the shoulders. A basket hangs from one hand and a staff stands in the other, and a flowering stem rises at each side of the chair, framing him at the base.
The bail is a wide flat polished band left completely plain — the one smooth element against all that cutting — and the reverse is plain polished, flat enough to take an engraving.
This is the third piece in our filigree-border set, alongside the Saint Jude and Saint Michael. The Santo Niño is Christ as a child, and the devotion runs deepest in Mexico, the Philippines and Spain — carried by travellers, prisoners and miners, and handed down in families rather than bought new.
