The Haile Selassie Diamond Portrait Pendant is built as a framed picture rather than a medal. The Emperor is carved in high relief in satin gold — imperial crown, full regalia, the embroidery of the cope rendered stitch by stitch — set against a radiating sunburst engraved into a contrasting polished ground so the light appears to come from behind him.
Around that sits a genuine frame: a scalloped outer edge traced in hand-set diamonds, an inner band of engraved acanthus scrollwork, and a beaded milgrain lip where the frame meets the portrait. Three distinct treatments before your eye reaches the figure, which is what makes it read as a framed object rather than a stamped disc.
The reverse is a finished face in its own right. The Lion of Judah walks with the cross-topped staff and banner in high relief, over a ground patterned with repeating lion-and-crown motifs, above an engraved plaque carrying the Emperor’s words: “Imagination, devotion, perseverance, together with divine grace, will assure you success.” Stones are set into the reverse field and into the cross finial.
At 75g in 18K with a 2.5" face and an openwork gallery wall, this is the heaviest pendant in the collection and it is meant to be seen from both sides.
