The Holy Infant of Atocha Arched Filigree Pendant is built as a pointed arch — narrow and rounded at the crown, spreading to a wide base. It is the shape of a chapel niche, and it puts the figure in a doorway rather than in a frame.
The border is pierced filigree — acanthus scrollwork cut clean through so light passes between the volutes — with a carved fan cresting the arch and a scalloped shell band closing the foot.
Inside, the ground is a diamond-cut ray burst, fanning from behind the figure to the edge of the arch on every side. Those cut rays are the brightest surface on the piece by a distance.
The Santo Niño is seated frontally in his wide-brimmed pilgrim’s hat with a plume, a short cape over the shoulders, a basket hanging from one hand and a staff with the gourd in the other. A flowering vase stands on each side of the chair, and the flowers are cut bloom by bloom.
The bail is a wide plain polished band, deliberately smooth against all the piercing.
