The Lady Buddha (Guan Yin) Diamond Framed Pendant is built as a thick rectangular plaque — 50mm across the face without the bail — and the weight is in the depth of the carving, not in a solid slab: the scene is cut in high relief, the sides are pierced right through in a repeating coin lattice, and the reverse is a finished face of its own.
The front is Guan Yin standing on a dragon. She is carved in deep satin relief, robes falling in long folds to the lotus at her feet, hands held at the chest. Behind her the ground is worked into rolling cloud and wave, stippled so it recedes, and out of it rises the dragon — head turned up at her feet with horns, whiskers and a scaled body coiling back into the clouds. A bird crosses the upper corner. Every part of that scene is bare satin gold.
The diamonds do three jobs and no more. A full row of round brilliants runs the entire perimeter in a raised bezel frame. A disc of pavé sits behind her head as the halo. A short row of stones picks out the lotus at her feet. The carving itself is never set — at 6.5tcw across 133 stones the light is used to frame the scene, not to cover it.
The reverse is yours. As shown it carries an all-over key-fret ground with a single raised, polished Chinese character at the centre — a family surname on this example. The bail is a hinged two-row pavé post with a 6mm opening, sized for a heavy chain.
Guan Yin is Avalokiteśvara in feminine form, the bodhisattva of compassion, widely known as Lady Buddha. Shown riding the dragon, she is the one who crosses the sea to answer whoever calls.
