The Medium God of War (Guan Gong) Pendant is a rounded-corner rectangular plate at 40mm by 26.5mm — the size that sits between our small rectangular pieces and the large seated plaque.
Guan Yu strides across the field with his guandao held on the diagonal, blade to the upper corner and shaft crossing the whole plate. Running the weapon corner to corner is what lets a full-length figure fit into 40mm without the composition going flat — the diagonal gives it length the plate does not have.
He is in armour with the robe flying behind, the beard carried long, and cloud and flame scrollwork fills the ground around him so no part of the field is left blank.
The relief is high and the finish is bright, with satin on the figure. The bail is a plain round ring, which lets the plate turn freely rather than sitting fixed.
At 27g in 24K it is dense for its footprint and takes a chain up to 4.5mm.
