The Skull & Roses Rectangular Pendant is a large rectangular plaque with softly rounded corners, carved edge to edge — there is no flat ground anywhere on the face.
The skull sits at the centre in the highest relief, cranium, orbits and jaw fully modelled, teeth cut individually. Open roses crowd in around it on every side, five of them in full bloom with layered petals and turned edges, pressing right up against the bone. Behind and between them the entire remaining surface is filled with leaves and half-seen buds cut in lower relief, so the eye keeps finding more the longer it stays.
That layering is the whole trick of the piece: three depths of carving on one plate, with the skull forward, the blooms in the middle ground and the foliage receding behind. The satin finish across the field is what makes it legible — the high points catch and the recesses hold shadow.
It is the oldest idea in ornament, memento mori: the flower and the skull on the same object, beauty and its end in one frame. A wide flat bail sits above, cut for a heavy chain.
