The Taoist Bagua Circular Diamond Pendant takes the opposite approach to a flooded piece. Instead of a thousand grains of micro-pavé, the whole diamond content sits in one ring of 42 large round brilliants around the rim, each held in its own bezel with gold visible between them. At 1.85tcw across 42 stones, the individual stones average several times the size of the ones on our pavé pieces — which means at 27mm you read distinct diamonds rather than a bright band.
Inside the ring, the trigrams are sunk into the plate. All eight are cut as recessed channels in a satin gold field — each one three stacked bars, some running unbroken across and some split in the middle — and the floor of every bar is finished bright against the matte surface around it. Twenty-four cut bars in all, each one reading as a shadow line with a light bottom rather than as surface engraving.
At the centre, the taijitu sits as a polished disc against the satin ground, the S-curve dividing it cleanly so the two halves catch light at different angles. It is the one bright surface inside the ring.
The bail is a single-row pavé post with a 4mm opening, scaled so it does not compete with the rim stones.
The bagua is the set of eight three-line figures from the Yijing, built from broken and unbroken lines, and the arrangement of them around a central taijitu is one of the oldest diagrams in Chinese thought. It is worn for balance and protection.
