The 88 Dragon Pendant is built on one idea carried all the way through: a mirrored pair of dragons, each looping its own body into a figure eight, set side by side so the piece reads as 88. It is not a number with dragons applied to it — the dragons are the digits, and every curve of the numerals is a length of scaled body.
The carving is worked in the round and pierced straight through. Both loops are fully open, and the space inside them is filled with curling cloud scrolls rather than left blank, so light passes through the piece and the openwork reads from any angle.
The detail is where the 100 grams go. Each dragon carries a full field of individually cut scales running the length of the body, a spined dorsal ridge down its back, flame whiskers and a maned crest swept back from the head, bared teeth, and clawed feet gripping the lower loop. The heads meet at the centre, jaws open, facing one another.
The bail is a dragon in its own right — a third head, carved front and back with the same maned crest and set on a hinged barrel so it swings. Its opening is a full 10.5mm, sized for a heavy rope or scale chain.
The whole piece is finished in a soft satin. There are no stones and no plating anywhere on it — at this level of carving, polish would flare across the scale work and flatten it.
In Chinese, eight is spoken almost the same way as the word for prosperity, which is why it is the number people pay a premium for on plates and phone numbers. Doubled, it is the emphatic form — and the paired dragons repeat the doubling in the carving itself.
