The Diamond-Cut Back and Border Foo Dog Pendant is named for exactly what it is. A wide band of deep diamond-cut faceting runs around all four sides of the rounded-corner plate, and the recessed field inside it is cut a second time into rays radiating out from behind the figure. Both surfaces throw light; the lion does not.
The Foo Dog sits at the centre in a fine satin, head turned toward the viewer, mouth open over bared teeth, mane worked in tight curls down the shoulders. He wears a beaded collar with a bell at the throat, and one forepaw rests on a brocade ball carved with a lattice pattern.
Keeping the animal matte against two bright cut grounds is what lets a 1.5” piece read as clearly as it does — the eye finds the figure first and the light second.
A flat tab bail sits above, holding the plate square on the chain.
Foo dogs are the guardian lions set in pairs at the gates of temples and houses, kept as protectors of the threshold. The one with his paw on the ball is the male, holding the world.
