The Diamond-Cut God of War (Guan Gong) Openwork Rectangular Pendant is cut through rather than filled in. The border is a band of pierced scrollwork — linked curls running the full perimeter, every opening sawn out by hand — and inside it the field drops into a deep well cut as a diamond-cut sunburst, long faceted rays fanning out from behind the figure and pierced through so the background stays open.
Guan Yu stands at the centre in a fine satin. One hand is raised to the long beard that made him famous; the other is lowered on the shaft of his guandao, the pole running the height of the panel. The armour is worked in detail — studded shoulder plates, a dragon across the front of the robe, heavy sleeves and skirts breaking into folds, boots planted at the base.
A tapered polished bail sits above the frame.
Guan Yu was a general of the late Han who was deified for loyalty and righteousness, and is kept today in homes and shops as a guardian — the figure watching the door.
