The Diamond-Cut Michelangelo’s Pietà Circular Pendant carries the Pietà — Michelangelo’s marble of 1499, the one that still stands in St Peter’s — in high relief at the centre of a round medallion.
The composition is reproduced as he cut it: Mary seated with the body of Christ laid across her lap, her robe falling in heavy folds that fill the base of the group, her right arm taking his weight under the shoulder while her left hand opens outward. The pyramid of the original is intact, which is the hard part at this scale — the whole reason the sculpture works is that the two figures read as one mass, and that is what survives here.
The figures are left in a fine satin, the way unpolished marble reads, and behind them the field is diamond-cut into rays running from the group out to the frame in contrasting metal. The effect is deliberate: still stone against moving light.
Around the edge runs a Greek key meander, mirror-polished, and the bail above is plain and flat.
Michelangelo was twenty-four when he carved it, and it is the only work he ever signed.
