The Diamond-Cut Money Frog Rectangular Pendant sets Jin Chan — the three-legged money toad — in high relief inside a mirror-polished rectangular frame. He squats forward with bulging eyes and a broad ridged back, a coin held in his mouth, more coins strung over his shoulders and heaped in a mound beneath him. The coins are carved individually, each with the square centre, so the pile reads as coins rather than texture.
The toad is worked in soft satin so the ridges of the back and the set of the eyes hold shadow. Behind him the field is diamond-cut into fine rays running out to the frame in contrasting metal, so he sits bright against moving light.
Jin Chan is placed in homes and shops to draw money in — traditionally facing inward, never toward the door, so the wealth comes toward you rather than leaving. Worn, it does the same job on the move.
