The Diamond-Cut Saint Lazarus in Arch Frame Pendant is built as a Gothic lancet arch. The saint stands full-length at the centre in high relief — haloed, bearded, leaning on his staff, his robe carved in deep folds and his legs bare and marked, exactly as he is shown in the churches where people go to ask him for things. Two dogs attend him at his feet, one at each side, each modelled separately down to the muzzle and the set of the legs.
Behind him the entire ground is a fan of diamond-cut rays, hundreds of fine spokes running from the figure outward to the arch and cut clean through the plate. Light passes between them, so the saint reads as standing inside the light rather than in front of a wall. It is the most demanding cutting we do — every ray has to land on the same centre and hold its width the whole way out.
The frame is thick carved scrollwork, acanthus leaf and shell, worked in satin all the way round and closing at the apex under a shell crown. Frame and rays play off each other: matte carving against moving light.
Lazarus is the patron of the sick and the poor, and one of the most petitioned figures there is — his feast on 17 December fills shrines from Havana to Miami with people walking on their knees. This is a piece bought for a reason, usually more than one.
