Eagle and Lion Sculpted Ring

An eagle and a lion, nose to beak, on 21mm of gold.

The Eagle and Lion Sculpted Ring puts two animals on the crown facing one another, and carves both in the round rather than in relief. On one side a lion, its mane cut as a deep shaggy mass of individually worked locks. On the other an eagle, head lowered and turned in, the hooked beak parted and the neck feathers cut in overlapping rows. They meet at the centre with barely a gap between them, and neither is stylised — both are modelled as real heads with real anatomy.

A row of raised beads runs beneath them, separating the sculpture from the shoulders and giving the crown a visible base to sit on. Without it the two heads would run straight into the engraving and the piece would lose its structure.

The shoulders are engraved, not cast smooth. A dense acanthus scroll runs down each side — leaves curling off a central rib, each one cut with a fine line down its spine and terminating in a tight volute. The cutting is deep enough to read from a distance, and the pattern carries all the way round toward the back of the shank rather than stopping at the shoulder.

The finish is what holds it together. The whole ring is worked to a fine satin, with the high points of the mane, the beak and the scroll edges left brighter where the tool has been over them. On a piece this size a full polish would wash out the carving and a full matte would kill it — the split finish is the reason the detail survives.

At 21mm across the crown and 35g in 24K at size 6, this is a substantial ring. The shank tapers toward the back so the weight sits on top of the finger rather than under it.
