The God of War (Guan Gong) Partial Diamond Pendant is a free-cut standing figure — no plate behind it, the outline cut to the general and his robes. What makes it a partial setting is where the stones stop: the armour and the long robe are pavé, and everything that identifies the man is left in bare satin gold.
The pavé runs over the layered shoulder guards, the chest, the belt and the full length of the skirt, laid in even rows that follow the panels of the armour rather than cutting across them. A full setting would have buried the carving; 160 stones placed only on the plate surfaces read as light coming off metal armour, which is what they are meant to be.
The face, beard and crown carry no stones at all. His long beard falls to the chest in carved strands, the winged crown sits above it, and the free hand is raised to gather the beard — the gesture Guan Yu is always shown making. In the other hand the guandao is carried low, shaft running down past the legs, and the blade at the bottom is engraved with a dragon and left satin so the engraving stays readable.
The boots and the trailing hem are satin too, worked in cloud scrolls at the toe and the back edge. The result is a piece that reads at arm’s length as a figure rather than as a shape covered in stones.
The bail is a two-row pavé post with a 4mm opening.
Guan Yu was a general of the Later Han, deified for keeping his word at any cost. Standing with the guandao rather than seated, this is the martial reading — the protector rather than the sage.
