Not a portrait of the Holy Family. The night itself.
The Holy Family Oval Pendant is a nativity scene, and that choice is what separates it from every other Holy Family medal on the market. Most of them line the three figures up facing forward. This one puts the Child lying in the manger at the bottom of the oval, bedded in carved straw, with his parents leaning in over him from either side.
Joseph comes in from the left, bearded, his staff laid across the front of his robe. Mary leans in from the right under a veil that falls the length of her back. Both heads are bowed, and they nearly meet at the top of the oval — which closes the composition into a circle around the Child and leaves no gap for the eye to escape through.
The relief is deliberately low and soft, closer to a Renaissance plaquette than to the deep carving we usually cut. Nothing is sharp; the forms rise and fall gradually out of a satin ground. Against that, the raised rim is left mirror-bright, and it is the only hard edge on the piece.
At 20g in 18K inside a footprint just over an inch tall, it is dense for its size and hangs flat. The reverse is plain polished — the obvious place for a wedding date or a child’s name.
The Holy Family is the image of the household rather than the church. It is what people buy on a marriage, a first child, or a move, and it asks for the ordinary things.
