The Medal of Saint Benedict Pendant carries the complete traditional design, worked in two tones so every letter stands clear: the raised cross and lettering finished bright against a satin field.
At the centre is the Cross of Saint Benedict. Down its upright run the letters C S S M L — Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux, “May the Holy Cross be my light.” Across the arm, N D S M D — Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux, “Let not the dragon be my guide.” In the four quadrants sit C S P B, for Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti, the Cross of our Holy Father Benedict.
Around the rim runs the exorcism verse in its usual abbreviation — V R S N S M V · S M Q L I V B — Vade Retro Satana, Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana; Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas. “Begone Satan, never tempt me with your vanities; what you offer me is evil, drink the poison yourself.” Crowning the medal at twelve o’clock is PAX — peace — flanked by laurel sprigs.
At just under an inch across it sits flat and reads clearly, and the bail is kept plain and polished so nothing competes with the face.
