The museum crucifix without the angels — the same build, stripped to the cross and the figure.
The Museum-Level Crucifix (No Angels) Pendant is the counterpart to our Museum-Level Crucifix and Angels piece: the same order of workmanship, with the flanking figures taken out so the corpus stands alone.
The cross is the Orthodox form — a short titulus bar above the main arms and a footrest bar below, giving it three crossbars rather than one. Every arm ends in a budded trefoil terminal with a raised circular boss set into it, each boss carved with its own rosette.
The arms themselves are not left plain. They are worked over their whole length in dense granulated ornament, so there is no smooth ground anywhere on the cross, and behind the corpus’s head a sunburst nimbus fans out in cut rays.
The corpus is fully modelled and deep — ribcage, drawn abdomen, the loincloth knotted at the hip, head fallen to the right, feet crossed on the lower bar. It stands well clear of the ornament behind it, which is the hard part of a design this busy: the figure has to read against a background that is also carved.
At 63mm by 41.7mm and 30g in 18K it takes a chain up to 6.5mm.
