A Spanish treasure cob, struck new in solid gold.
The Pirate’s Gold Pendant is modelled on the escudo cobs that came out of the New World mints in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries — the coins that filled the treasure fleets and, when those fleets went down, the wrecks that people still dive for.
The face carries the Jerusalem cross: a cross potent with a small cross in each quarter, set inside a lobed quatrefoil tressure exactly as the originals were struck. Around it the field is left deliberately irregular — pitted, uneven, the design running off the edge on one side — because that is what a hand-struck cob looks like. These were cut from a bar and hammered between dies, never milled round, and no two came out the same.
The coin sits in a smooth polished bezel with four ribbed prong bars holding it at the compass points, and a long tapered spade bail above. That frame is the only bright, regular thing on the piece, and the contrast is the point: a rough coin in a clean setting.
To be clear about what this is — the coin is newly made by us in solid gold, in the manner of a period cob. It is not a recovered artifact and is not sold as one. What you get is the look and the weight of treasure, in the purity you choose.
