The Small Virgin Mary Face Diamond Pendant is a sculpted bust rather than a medallion. There is no frame, no plate and no border — the outline of the pendant is the outline of the veil. Mary's head tips forward and slightly to one side, her eyes are closed, and the mantle comes over her hair, down past her cheek and gathers across the shoulders in heavy folds that fall away to the hem.
The whole piece is sandblasted. Face, veil and drapery are all finished to the same fine frosted matte, with nothing left bright anywhere on the body of the pendant. That is a deliberate choice and it is what makes the face work: at 25mm there is no glare to fight, so the expression carries entirely on the modelling — the lowered lids, the straight nose, the set of the mouth.
The carving is deep and fully in the round. The veil undercuts around the face so the head reads as a head rather than a relief, and the folds across the shoulders are cut in real steps rather than engraved lines. Turn it and the profile holds up: the brow, nose and chin all stand clear.
The bail is fixed and does not swing. It is a short single-row post set with six round diamonds, soldered solid to the crown of the veil with a 5mm opening. Because it is rigid rather than hinged, the pendant hangs at one fixed angle and sits square on the chest instead of rocking — and those six stones are the only stones on the piece.
This is the sorrowing, downcast reading of Mary rather than the crowned or radiant one. All of the work is in the face and the fall of the cloth.
