The Sun Wukong Pendant is not a plate with a figure on it — it is a free-cut sculpture, the silhouette following the figure with no backing and no frame anywhere. That is why the footprint comes out almost square at 32.2mm by 32.6mm: the piece is as wide as the staff and as tall as the cap, and nothing was trimmed to fit a rectangle.
He stands on a somersault cloud, and the cloud is fully a third of the piece — carved into deep rolling spiral curls that give the whole thing its base and its motion.
Above it, everything is in the pose people know him by. The phoenix-feather cap sends two long plumes arcing back over his head. He wears layered armour — shoulder plates, a worked breastplate, a sash knotted at the waist and skirt panels flaring at the hips. The Ruyi Jingu Bang, his golden staff, is carried horizontally behind his neck with both hands up on it, running clean past the width of his shoulders on both sides.
The whole thing is finished in satin with only the bail left bright, so the armour, the fur and the cloud read as three different textures instead of one glare.
It is the compact companion to our 3D Monkey King Riding a Dragon. Sun Wukong is the trickster of Journey to the West — born from stone, thrown out of heaven for insubordination, pinned under a mountain for five hundred years, then sent to escort a monk across the world. He is the patron of people who do not take instruction well and are useful anyway.
