Mid-leap, mouth open, staff up.
The Thai Hanuman Diamond Pendant is a fully three-dimensional figure, not a relief on a plate. Hanuman is caught in a khon dance stance — one leg driving down, the other kicked back, torso turned, one hand thrown up with the fingers flared and the other swinging a long tapered staff over his head. He is crowned with the tiered chada headdress, jaw open, fangs showing.
The whole surface is engraved. Over the sandblasted matte skin runs a dense field of fine chased spirals, and over that the Thai ornament proper: the pleated chong kraben wrap at the hips, the tiered collar, the arm cuffs, the anklets and the long scarf ends curling out behind him in flame shapes. There is almost no plain metal anywhere on the piece.
The diamonds are placed where the regalia goes, not scattered. Two crossed sangwan bands run over the chest and meet at a boss in the centre; a close row sits in the collar; a band circles each wrist and the grip of the staff; and the staff itself is set along its length. Approximately 100 stones in all, all small and all doing the same job — marking the jewellery the figure is wearing.
The piece is solid. It is carved in the round with no hollow back and no backing plate: the tail curls behind the thigh, the raised arm stands clear of the head, and the trailing foot and the scarf ends are free in the air. From the side you see a figure, not a profile.
The bail is a hinged two-row pavé post with a 6mm opening, and it carries the stamp on its reverse.
Hanuman is the white monkey general of the Ramakien, the Thai telling of the Ramayana — the one who is quick, loyal and effectively impossible to kill. This is the dancing, airborne version of him rather than the kneeling one.
