The Aztec Calendar Pendant reproduces the Piedra del Sol — the twelve-foot basalt monolith unearthed in Mexico City in 1790 and now the centrepiece of the Museo Nacional de Antropología. What makes this piece worth its weight is that nothing has been simplified out of it to fit.
At the centre is Tonatiuh, the sun, his tongue out as a sacrificial flint and clawed hands to either side. Around him sit the four previous world-ages — jaguar, wind, rain and water — in the arms of the ollin sign, the four eras the Mexica believed had already ended before this one.
Beyond that runs the ring of twenty day-signs, each one carved separately: crocodile, wind, house, lizard, serpent, death, deer, rabbit and the rest, running counter-clockwise the way the calendar reads. Bands of rays and stone-glyphs fill the next rings out.
At the outermost edge two fire serpents run head to tail around the whole disc and meet face to face at the bottom, carrying the sun through the sky between them.
The entire face is worked in satin so the carving holds its shadow, with only the bail left bright. At 2 inches across and this thickness it is a substantial piece of gold, and the detail rewards being looked at closely rather than from across a room.
