A shadow box with a war god standing inside it.
The Diamond-Cut God of War (Guan Gong) Rectangular Pendant is built in two planes. The outer frame is a mirror-polished rectangle carrying a Greek key meander around all four sides. Inside it the plate drops away into a deep recess, and the whole back wall of that recess is cut into a diamond-cut sunburst — long faceted rays radiating outward from behind the figure, throwing light back through the opening.
Guan Yu stands at the centre in a fine satin that keeps him separate from all that movement. He holds his guandao upright in one hand, the pole running the full height of the frame; his other hand is lowered at his side. The carving takes the details seriously — the long beard that made him famous, the plumed war helm, scaled shoulder armour, a dragon mask across the belly plate, and robes breaking into folds down to the boots.
Behind his shoulder rise three triangular banner pennants, each worked with a dragon device, the standards of a general in the field.
Guan Yu was a general of the late Han who was deified for loyalty and righteousness, and is kept today in homes and shops as a guardian — the figure watching the door.
