The face on the front, the statue on the back — two halves of the same idea.
The Eyes Closed Jesus Pendant is cut to the silhouette of the head rather than set inside a frame, so the outline of the hair is the outline of the piece. A mirror-polished rim follows that irregular edge the whole way round, and the shell is deep — seen from the side it stands well off the chest.
The face is carved in deep satin relief with the eyes closed and the head slightly turned. The crown of thorns is worked as woven branches with the thorns cut individually, and the hair and beard fall away from it in separate strands rather than a single mass. It is a quiet face, not an anguished one.
The reverse is a solid plate engraved with Christ the Redeemer — arms open on the mountain, cloud below the pedestal, and rays fanning out behind the figure to the edge of the plate, all drawn in polished line against a satin ground.
The pairing is the point. The front is the face at the end of the Passion; the back is the same figure with his arms open over a city. You wear one and carry the other.
The piece is hollow with a solid back, which is what keeps a 2” head at a wearable 35 grams in 18K instead of double that.
