The Monkey King riding a guardian lion, stacked vertically.
The Monkey King and Foo Dog Pendant is a free-cut sculpture with no plate behind it, and the composition runs top to bottom rather than side to side — at 72.4mm by 38.2mm it is nearly twice as tall as it is wide.
Sun Wukong takes the upper third: the phoenix-feather cap with its twin plumes, a snarling face, layered armour with the pattern cut into every plate, and the Ruyi Jingu Bang carried horizontally behind his shoulders — the staff running out past his arms on both sides, which is what gives the top of the piece its width.
Below him the foo dog takes everything else. Its maned head fills the middle of the pendant, eyes wide and jaw open on a full set of teeth, the mane cut curl by curl around it, and the forelegs come down to heavy clawed paws that finish the bottom of the silhouette.
The whole thing is finished in a soft satin and carries 155g in 24K. It takes a chain up to 7.5mm.
Sun Wukong was the stone monkey who fought heaven to a standstill and lost; the foo dog is the guardian set at temple gates to keep out what does not belong. Putting one on the other is a joke about hierarchy that anyone who knows the story will get.
