First animal of the zodiac, sitting in the money.
The Rat and Money Bag Pendant is carved fully in the round — a small sculpture rather than a plaque. The rat sits up inside an open money bag, paws on the rim, ears cocked forward, whiskers cut fine across a satin face. He is grinning.
The bag is gathered and tied with a carved rope cord, the fabric falling in soft folds around him, and the front of it carries the character 財 — cái, wealth — raised and polished against the satin.
The whole piece is finished in fine satin with the ears, the rope and the character taken back to a bright polish, so the highlights land exactly where the detail is.
The rat opens the Chinese zodiac — first of the twelve, the one that got there by cleverness rather than strength — and paired with the money bag it reads the way it is meant to: quick, resourceful, and good with money. It is a common gift in a Rat year and for anyone born in one.
