The moment after the fall, on a tablet you can read at arm's length.
The Saint Michael Archangel Diamond Framed Pendant is a cushion-cornered rectangle. Michael stands at the centre with both wings spread to the frame edges, sword raised in his right hand and a chain running from his left down into the lower corner. Below his feet the defeated figure is twisted back against the rocks. His robe and the wing feathers are carved deep enough to throw real shadow.
The background is a diamond-cut sunburst. Fine straight rays radiate from behind his head out to the frame on every side, each one taken down with a faceting wheel so it throws a hard line of light. It is the same gold as the figure, cut two different ways: the rays flash, the figure does not, and the eye goes straight to him.
The figure is sandblasted, the rays are cut bright. Michael, the wings, the drapery, the rocks and the fallen figure are all finished matte, so the whole scene reads as modelling rather than glare. Only the ray field and the frame are left to shine.
A single row of large round diamonds frames the tablet, set shoulder to shoulder in a prong-style rail round all four sides and over the rounded corners — 65 stones. They sit proud of the plate, which is what gives the piece its outline at a distance. Seen edge-on the whole pendant is a thin flat tablet with that stone rail standing off the rim.
The back is plain. One smooth, mirror-polished face, with the stamp on the bail.
The bail is a hinged two-row pavé post with a 6mm opening and a plain polished reverse.
Michael is the archangel of protection — the one invoked against harm rather than for favour. This is the frontal, full-wingspan version of the scene, with the sunburst carried right out to the frame.
