An owl sits on top of this one, and it is the first thing you notice.
The Santa Muerte Portrait Pendant is a large plaque with a 3D owl perched on the crest — a fully modelled bird standing above the frame rather than carved into it, which is what gives the piece its outline. The owl is her companion in the iconography, and here it is treated as sculpture in its own right.
The frame is pierced acanthus scrollwork, deep and openwork, curling out past the rectangle on all four sides so the edge never runs straight.
Inside, Santa Muerte stands full-length in a crowned veil, the skull face turned out, her robe falling in heavy folds to the foot of the plate. She holds the scythe in one hand with the shaft running the full height and the blade curving over her shoulder, and the globe in the other. A finely textured ground fills the space behind her.
The finish sets a satin figure against the textured field with the scrollwork left bright, and the depth of the frame means the plate reads as three separate layers.
At 59.2mm by 49.2mm and 78g in 18K it takes a chain up to 7mm.
Santa Muerte is the folk saint of the last resort — petitioned for protection, healing and safe return by people the official church does not reach. The scythe cuts, the globe says her reach has no edges.
