The Standing Laughing Buddha (Budai) Pendant is the travelling version of a figure we usually build seated. He is upright and mid-stride, and the two attributes that define him are both here: the cloth sack knotted and slung over his left shoulder, and the staff gripped in his right hand and running down past his hip.
The face is caught at full laugh — eyes creased shut, cheeks pushed up into them, mouth wide open, ears long and heavy. The head is bare and round with the crown bump worked into it.
His robe hangs open to leave the belly bare, and the belly is the piece’s centre of gravity in every sense: smooth, round, deliberately undecorated, with the drapery gathered and knotted below it and the hem breaking into deep carved folds around his feet.
It is a free-cut silhouette — no plate, no frame — and it is worked solid and thick. Ten grams in 18K inside a 27.3mm footprint is a dense piece of gold for its size. The finish is satin throughout with the bail left bright.
Budai is the monk of contentment, and the belly gets rubbed for luck because the point of him is that wanting less is its own kind of wealth. Standing with the sack, he is the version of that idea on the move.
