The Tiger Rectangular Pendant is a large rectangular plaque with softly rounded corners, and the head takes up nearly all of it — brow to jaw, ear to ear, with only a narrow polished margin left around the edge. The relief is deep enough that the muzzle and brow stand well clear of the plate and throw real shadow across it.
The carving is all in the fur. Every stroke is cut individually, following the growth direction the whole way round: swept back off the muzzle, fanning out through the ruff, breaking into the striped pattern across the forehead. The eyes are set under a heavy brow and the whisker pads are worked in fine detail. The entire carved surface is left in a soft satin against the mirror-polished border, which is the only bright metal on the face.
The pendant is built hollow with a solid back. That is what makes a piece this size wearable — the face carries full-depth carving at three and a quarter inches tall, while the hollow body keeps the weight down and the solid back plate closes and stiffens it. A comparable piece cast solid at these dimensions would be uncomfortable to wear.
A wide flat bail sits above, cut to take a heavy chain.
